(WMC-TV) - The new unified school district officially kicked into registration mode Tuesday. Parents and students are working to get set for the new 2013-2014 school year.

School employees say registration went underway without any problems.

"Today has run very smoothly," said Riverdale principal Joseph Bond. "We've had lots of smiling faces, kids eager to come back to school and the process has been very smooth today."

As students and their parents get ready for the next 180 days of classes, some parents expressed mixed feelings about the new unified school district and their kids being part of it. Other parents say that not much has changed.

Before registration day, mother Kimberly Quiney closely followed the merger process for any changes.

"I was interested in the uniforms, I was interested in the bell times, I was interested in the before and after care," she said. "The school times were odd to me that the youngest kids go to school the latest, but as long as they have aftercare, I'm happy."

After the address verification, the registration process goes through about five other steps, including "before and after care" and transportation.

Brewster Elementary School principal Angela Askew says Memphis parents were already accustomed to pre-registering online, so the process has run smoothly.

"It saves a lot of time so if parents can do the online registration that would help greatly," she said.

She is hopeful about the new school system.

Registration runs until 8 p.m. Tuesday to accommodate work schedules. To pre-register your student online, click here.
