MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Mississippi Highway Patrol confirms Corey Maclin, Memphis wrestling personality and local TV personality, died Tuesday night in a car crash.

Maclin's vehicle rolled on Interstate 55 in Panola County around 11 p.m.

The father of six was known around Memphis for his role in the wrestling community. When he left the wrestling scene behind, it was to run for the office of Shelby County Court Clerk in 2010. He lost to Republican candidate Wayne Mashburn.

He became well known in Memphis, especially on Action News 5, after his time hosting Memphis Wrestling with Dave Brown. He also worked closely with Jerry Lawler, who remembers him from the beginning.

"Corey came in and started just as a commentator for the wrestling company that I owned," said Lawler. "And over the years, Corey became an intricate part."

Lawler says the news of his death comes as a shock.

"Sad day for wrestling and wrestling fans," he said.

But it is what Maclin he leaves behind that Lawler will remember most.

"He was sort of a larger than life, very charismatic guy, the cool thing about Corey was what you saw is what you got."

Maclin's friend John Blunt agrees. When he saw Maclin Friday afternoon, he did not realize that would be the last time they would meet.

"He came by my office and was talking about bringing wrestling back and excited and enthusiastic," said Blunt.

Blunt says Maclin was always passionate about his plans.

"Somebody that tried to serve the community, somebody that tried to put some inspiration into people's lives and always out there to help somebody regardless of their status in life," said Blunt.

Lawler added, "The most valuable thing on Earth is time and all the money in the world couldn't buy Corey another minute."

A spokesman for the Maclin family released the following statement Wednesday:

We are grateful and dearly touched for the overwhelming outpouring of support and concern from our community concerning the loss of our beloved Corey. Corey Maclin loved Memphis and Memphians, and he dedicated his life to bringing joy and happiness to the whole Memphis community through the venues of news, entertainment, and through public service.

Obviously, this is a time of great grief and sadness for us. We appreciate you keeping us in your prayers while our family embraces each other and tries to find some comfort at this unexpected and devastating loss of such a great man. We thank you in advance for respecting our privacy.

We will issue a statement regarding memorial and funeral arrangements at a later date.
