Parents expected to spend more on school supplies this year

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - School supplies will cost parents a little bit more this year. Compared to last year, parents are expected to spend 7.3 percent more on school supplies. That information comes from an annual survey conducted by Huntington National Bank.

Shelby County parent Cheryl Polk is not surprised.

"Just the demands of the supplies and you won't ever see the supplies," she said.

Here is the breakdown from the survey:

Parents of elementary students will spend an average of $577 on back-to-school supplies

Parents of middle school students will spend an average of $764

Parents of high school students will spend an average of $1,223

Before you head out to do your shopping, take inventory of the supplies you already have. And who says you have to buy new supplies? Talk to neighbors, friends, and relatives to see if they have used items that could work. And don't forget to check online prices, too.

In Tennessee and Arkansas, this weekend will be a great time to shop for school supplies. School supplies, clothing, and computers will be tax free depending on how much you spend.
