(WMC-TV) - After more than 50 years, shoppers have outgrown the Midtown Kroger on Union Avenue.

Shoppers say it is congested and does not carry many items desired. Many people in the area were elated to hear a brand new store at the same location.

Kroger's Joe Bell offered Action News 5 an exclusive look at the initial concept drawing of a new store that will replace the old one at 1761 Union.

The building will sit at the far West end of the block with the entrance facing East.

"The present store is about 2,800 square feet of sales floor. The new store will be about 50,000 feet of sales floor," said Bell. "You don't often get a chance to redo or remodel or create an entire block in Midtown."

The first sign of progress will be in a couple of months when crews will demolish The Belvedere apartments. They will not implode it; they are going to chip away at it from the top floor down.

There is not enough room to add more parking, but store employees and delivery trucks will go underground.

"People have resonated over and over they'd like more items, better items ... Things they've seen in other parts of the country," said Bell.

Bell says the new store could open in late 2014 or early 2015 and will be unlike any other Kroger.
