(WMC-TV) - One Mid-South church is taking a different approach to encourage a positive attitude on the first day of school.

The Christ United Methodist Church hosted the annual 'blessings for backpacks' ceremony Sunday aimed at honoring students, teachers, and school staffers.

Parents are excited and anxious as their children return to school.

"We just hope God be with them!" stated mother Karen Martin.

Several students also expressed joy about returning to school. Fifth-grader Erin Martin is eager go back-to-school. When asked why, her answer was simple.

"Because I can't wait to learn more..!" exclaimed Martin.

Although some are trepid about the changes the new unified school district may bring, church leaders say this is a time for optimism and faith.

"It's not just a matter of our blessing the backpacks. It's a matter of Christ blessing the backpacks. We believe the church should be involved in education," declared Pastor of the Christ United Methodist Church Dr. Maxie Dumnam.

Among those who turned out for the service were the Superintendent of Unified Schools Dorsey Hopson and Mayor AC Wharton.

"The point we are making is that regardless of whether you have a child in school...any school. it is still your business as an individual to support our educational system," stated Wharton.
