Lower-income girls receive free pampering from Mid-South salon

(WMC-TV) - One Memphis salon is boosting lower-income girls' self-esteem before they go back-to-school.

Bella Donna salon hosted a free pampering for over a dozen seventh and eighth graders Sunday.

"We'll be getting our hair done, makeup facials, nails," stated eighth grader Di'Jerika Powell.

The salon donated its services to The Girlz Life Empowerment Program for at risk teenagers.

"We chose an organization we wanted to give back to the community. We chose Girlz Life; so, we could boost the self esteem of young ladies before they go back to school," stated salon owner Shandra Thompson.

Thompson's motivator? Wanting to help the girls deal with the pressure of unrealistic standards set by celebrities, magazines, and on social media.

"We know that hair, makeup, and nails build confidence. (Now,) they can be confident going back to school and focus on their studies...not (having) to worry about their outward appearance," explained Thompson.

"I really do appreciate that they chose to do this for Girlz Life," stated eighth grader Powell.
