MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Thousands of Shelby County students are heading back to the classroom this morning. It is the very first day that the unified school district will open as one entity with both Shelby County Schools and former Memphis City Schools' students and teachers.

Shelby County Schools leaders have been working for months in an effort to make the transition into a unified school system run smoothly, but they say there are still challenges ahead.

"The journey's been long and not without hiccups, fittingly we're dealing with hiccups right now," said SCS Superintendent Dorsey Hopson.

One of the biggest changes students will notice is in the classroom.

At least 30 SCS employees were laid off Friday, with half of them being teachers.

The district also boosted security with Memphis police and Shelby County deputies assigned to every middle school and high school.

A big concern for many is school bus transportation. Routes were changed for some of the districts' 470 school buses, even after students were registered.

For parents with bus route question, there is a hot line you can call to get those questions answered. That number is (901) 321-2280.

We know that some stress comes along with the first day of school, so we at Action News 5 are working to make it a little bit more fun for parents as well as students.

All morning long, we will be sharing photos of your favorite AN5 anchors and reporters from their "back to school" days.

And don't forget ... as your student heads out the door this morning, take a back to school photo and send it to us! Looking back in 10 years, you will be glad you took it! And we may just feature it in one of our newscasts this evening. Send your kids' back to school photos to my5@wmctv.com.
