Mother to son's killers: This is genocide

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

While faith leaders preach a message of non-violence to the city's youth, one mother has delivered an impassioned plea directly to the people who killed her son.

Regina Weems only had a few moments to address her son's killers, and she used that time to speak for grieving mothers across the country.

"You all are black men. This is technically genocide what you are all doing - killing each other over stupid s*** instead of getting some kind of education and doing something with yourselves," Weems said.

Weems' 17-year-old son, Jason Covington Jr., was murdered Jan. 5, 2012, at the Tony Sudekum Housing Development.

Weems' speech at the July 20 sentencing for Donald Peoples, Cordell Clark and Donnetha Lewis was recorded on courtroom video and was obtained by Channel 4 News.

"Do you not understand how confusing this is for me - to mourn my baby, and he is gone, and still look at you all? You're gone, too," Weems said.

All three of the people convicted of the murder are in their early 20s.

"If I can't say nothing else, I ask in the name of Jesus, in the name of the most high, whoever created all, wake up and stop the killing your stupid selves. Use your brains that God gave y'all," Weems said.

At times, Weems broke down in tears during her address.

"Think about what you're doing. This is bigger than Jason Covington Jr.," Weems said.

The district attorney's office said it made sure all three sentenced in the murder were present in court that day to hear Weems speak.
