Family and friends welcome home fallen Bartlett soldier

(WMC-TV) - Family members and friends welcomed home fallen Staff Sergeant Stephen New, who was killed in Afghanistan less than two weeks ago.

Fallen Sgt. New was welcomed Wednesday morning at the Millington Regional Jetport.

New, who grew up in Memphis, was shot and killed July 28 during an attack on his unit in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was a medic supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Motorcyclists displaying American flags formed a line leading to the airplane that delivered Sgt. New to his family.

New posthumously receive the Tennessee Fallen Heroes Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Mississippi Medal for Valor, and several other service-related awards.

The fallen soldier's funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church on North Germantown Road in Bartlett.

Action News 5's Justin Hanson was with Sgt. New's family at his homecoming this morning. On the news at 5 p.m., hear from New's sister and the officer who trained him about why his death is such a loss to his unit.
