MY TURN: Half percent sales tax increase

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis voters will now have the opportunity to go to the polls to vote for a half-percent increase in the city's sales tax. Part of this sales tax hike will go to fund pre-kindergarten education programs. It's hard to argue against the value of pre-K programs. Without the benefit of a pre-K program, many Memphis school children would arrive unprepared to begin their education. Research has shown that pre-K classes can be effective in getting children off to a better start. The other part of the sales tax increase would go toward a reduction in the Memphis property tax rate. I think you'll find a lot of people who would agree that Memphis property taxes are too high. It's unfortunate that this solution to lowering them is to impose a sales tax hike which is a more regressive form of taxation – a tax that hits poor people the hardest. Call me skeptical if you want, but if this sales tax passes, a lot of us will have to be watching very closely to be sure the property tax actually gets as lowered as promised.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
