Former Mid-South dog is helping cancer patients

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - An Arkansas dog that uses his nose for cancer research has been nominated for the American Humane Society Dog of the Year award in the search and rescue category.

John D is a trained search and rescue dog who began at an Arkansas animal shelter and is now using his abilities to save lives.

He and his pooch partners can tell if a patient has ovarian or thyroid cancer, all through the power of their puppy noses.

It's that skill that got John D nominated for the American Humane Society Hero Dog of the Year in the search and rescue category.

While John D's owner, Donna Waugh, is ecstatic at the nomination, Waugh would be happy with any of the dogs winning.

You can vote for John D by going here.

The winner will receive $6,500 for the charity of the owners' choice.
