Chadwell calls Bucs’ first scrimmage a good first step
CHARLESTON, SC -
Charleston Southern held its first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning at Buccaneer Field. First-year head coach Jamey Chadwell kept the Bucs on the field for over two hours and saw some elements he liked on both sides of the football.
"I thought our guys came out and really competed against each other," Chadwell said. "We had a lot of mistakes, but we had a lot of positive things too. I was pleased with our effort, not with our execution, but I thought it was a good first step for a first scrimmage."
Senior quarterback Malcolm Dixon and sophomore wide receiver Larry Jones III provided one of the highlights of the scrimmage when they hooked up on a 42-yard touchdown pass. Jones III made several plays throughout the day, exhibiting the form that allowed him to make the All-Big South Conference 2nd team last season.
"Malcolm does have a lot of experience but he has it in a lot of different offenses," said Chadwell of Dixon's transition to a new offensive system. "He's a high rep guy so he needs to get a lot of reps to feel comfortable. He's made a lot of strides and we really need him to be the best he's been in his time at Charleston Southern for us to be able to move the ball consistently."
Junior running back Christian Reyes led the way on the ground as the Bucs look to have a talented mix in the backfield along with the dynamic Dixon. Reyes showed off his physical running style once again, making a man miss and running over another on one eight-yard scamper for a first down.
Defensively, junior defensive tackle James Smith caused some havoc up front as the CSU defense made several stops in short yardage situations. Senior linebacker Adam Witzmann worked in tandem with James and his defensive line mates to make one such stop on a fourth and one, as senior fullback Zac Frazier was stonewalled short of the first down marker.
"I think our secondary is really good," said Chadwell of the Bucs' defensive strongpoint. "We've got tons of guys back there who are good football players. I think our linebackers are solid with Calvin Bryant and Adam Witzmann, two seniors, leading the way. Then up front, I think we're pretty strong. James Smith has had a great camp. He's been impressive."
The Bucs will gather as a team tonight to watch Charles James make his NFL debut for the New York Giants against the Pittsburgh Steelers. CSU will be off Sunday, before returning to two-a-days on Monday. Chadwell and company will play their second scrimmage of fall camp next Saturday.
