Cacti, hammers, spray paint: Widow develops homemade security system

Posted: Updated:
FRAYSER, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A 60-year-old Frayser widow is going to extreme measures to booby trap her home to prevent crime.

From a cactus plant to hammers and spray paint, Carol Brown decided to take measures into her own hands after becoming the victim of a carjacking.

Even before you enter Brown's house, you hear the dogs. Under the front window, you will see the cacti.

"Then nobody can steal my air conditioner too easy," she explained.

Brown also has signs warning that she has an alarm system.

"A storm door and I actually have an alarm system over there," she said.

Inside her home, the homemade security system continues at the front door.

"I've got these things (hedge clippers) right here at the door too," added Brown, who also has spray paint strategically located to mark any intruder who dare enter without permission.

"Spray them right in the face. Because that's not going to come off too quick," she said.

Many of her windows are boarded up.

"Because then, if somebody comes through there, I'm going to hear it," she explained. "I put the bookcase in front of it myself. I did all this after my husband died."

She continued, "I think we've got great police, but they can't be everywhere at one time."

The Memphis Police Department has a program to show you any weaknesses in your home security system. Call your area precinct for details.
