26 acronyms every parent should know

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - My elementary-aged cousins can operate my iPhone better than I can. I admit, the kids are more tech-savvy than me.

I shouldn't be surprised. When I was a teenager, my mother had one of the first car phones, but it was in a bag and had a cord. Just a few years later, we learned how to use smartphones together, and we're still learning.

This generation is so far ahead when it comes to cell phones, PDAs, tablets and the latest technology. That's why its so important as adults to monitor their activity and know what they're doing to ensure they are protected for any potential harm.

That's why we've composed this list of text and instant messaging acronyms that every parent should know:

ASL = Age/Sex/Location

BIL = Boss is Listening

BYOW - Bring Your Own Wine

CD9 = Code 9, parents are around

CICYHM = Can I Copy Your Homework?

COBRAS = Come On By Right After School

CU46 = See You For Sex

DOC = Drug Of Choice

DWI = Driving While Intoxicated

EIP = Eggo Is Preggo

FSBO = For Sale By Owner

FTF = Face To Face

GAB = Getting A Beer

KPC = Keeping Parents Clueless

LMIRL = Let's Meet In Real Life

NAZ = Name/Address/Zip

NIFOC = Nude In Front Of Computer

NSFW = Not Safe For Work

P911 = Parent Alert

PAL/PAW = Parents Are Listening/Parents Are Watching

RU/18 = Are You Over 18?

S2R = Send to Receive (photo)

WTG4a%/ = Want To Go For A Drink?

WTPA = Where's The Party At?

XTC = Ecstasy

Some of these acronyms may seem harmless out of context, but if used in a text or online conversations, could be signs of harmful or illegal behavior. They could also indicate when someone posing as another teen is trying to engage your child in an inappropriate relationship.

Be sure to have a talk with your teen about texting. It is never ok to share personal information - such as your address, age, and current location - with someone you don't know. If you suspect a stranger is contacting your child, call police.
