SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Two men who spent Monday night lost in Shelby Forest are now safe Tuesday morning after rescuers braved muddy and swampy terrain to find them.

Shelby County Deputies headed up an extensive search for two missing men at Shelby Forest.

"It's very easy to get turned around in these woods," said Dale Lane with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. "Looking for hunting areas but apparently got lost."

Officials say one man was found around 1 a.m. Tuesday and transported to the hospital in good condition.

They also found the second man, and search crews got him out about an hour later. Both men are expected to be OK.

Investigators say a man in his 70s, Gene Smith, and another in his 40s, Steven McBride, apparently got lost early Monday morning.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Department and the Bartlett Police Department were on the ground. The Memphis Police Department's helicopter was in the air since Monday night into early Tuesday morning looking for the two men.

Shelby County Deputies were called to help out with the search for the two men who were apparently looking for a good hunting spot in the area.

Search crews found the men's cars around 8:30 Monday night. They found the first man around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

They then found the second hunter around 2:15 a.m., but swampy deep waters caused rescuers trouble reaching him.
