(WMC-TV) - Police in Corinth, Mississippi are searching for a man who reportedly raped a young woman at a city park.

The assault and robbery happened Thursday, August 15. Investigators say a man with a gun forced a man and woman into Corinth City Park. Both were ordered to take off their clothes at gunpoint. The woman was raped, her friend was forced to watch, and they were both robbed.

The victims told police that the suspect took off on foot. Corinth police describe him as a tall slender man in his 20s.

Park visitors are looking over their shoulders after hearing about the rape that happened near a playground last week.

"I immediately got scared, I told mom, 'They need better patrol out here, just to keep the police on the look out,'" said Portia Williams.

Corinth Police Department has extra patrols in the park as a result of the violent attack.

"The playground area is used by a lot of children," said Captain Ralph Dance, Corinth Police Department. "It's pretty alarming."

Many part goers now say they will not be in the park alone or after dark.

"I look now to see all who's in the park," said Lois Shults.

The park's director said he will be asking the city and county to pay to install cameras since both fund the park. He also wants a deputy or officer with police power to be on guard during busy times.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Corinth Police Department.
