MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Area Transit Authority is teaming up with Memphis Public Library and Friends of the Library to give its riders access to books during their trip.

The program kicked off Wednesday with MATA's general manager and Memphis Mayor A C Wharton in attendance.

"Books on Buses" is designed to give those who take the bus free access to books and other reading material during their ride.

All of the books are available for the public to take home with them after riding with MATA.

The books come from Friends of the Library, the volunteer group that takes care of the thousands of books donated to the Memphis Public Library by the public every year.

Mayor Wharton says the donations are key to the "Books on Buses" program.

"This is a way that everybody can get involved as opposed to discarding books or just sitting there looking at them, get them to the library and they'll see that we put them to great use," said Mayor Wharton.

Bookcases stocked with the donated books and magazines will be available at MATA transit centers at the North End Terminal, Airways, and American Way Terminals.

If you borrow a book, you are asked to also later donate a book.
