MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Charges have been dropped against a 16-year-old who was accused of raping a special education student at East Memphis High School, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

An 18-year-old female student was taken to The MED last week, complaining of abdominal pain.

She told staff members she was assaulted in a stairwell. She identified a high school teen to be the perpetrator. He was taken to juvenile court the same day.

Detectives reviewed documents relevant to the case, school video, and forensic evidence.

The Shelby County District Attorney General's review of the sheriff's investigation determined there is insufficient evidence to sustain forcible rape charges against the defendant at this time.
The sheriff's office said this case is not closed.
