Grizzlies trade Wroten

(WMC-TV) - Almost no sooner than the ink was dry on FIBA's release for Nick Calathes to leave his Euro team and officially come to Memphis, the Grizzlies trade away his competition for the backup point guard spot.

The Grizzlies traded Tony Wroten Thursday to Philadelphia for a future second round draft pick.

Yahoo! Sports reports the pick is protected through the 50th overall pick so the 76ers are getting the point guard for one of the last ten picks in the draft.

The Grizzlies picked the 6'6" Wroten with the 25th pick of the first round out of the University of Washington in 2012.

After showing early promise with his length and deft passing ability, Wroten languished on the bench most of his rookie season and had several stints in the NBA Development League.

Wroten, who left college after his freshman season, didn't help his cause this summer with a bad showing in Las Vegas Summer League.

He shot less than 25 percent from the floor and was basically a turnover machine.

Calathes comes to Memphis with four years experience in the top leagues in Europe.

He was MVP of the Euorobasket Tournament in April.

The Grizz now have 14 players under guaranteed contract, one less than the NBA minimum.
