Man helps 74-year-old Memphian with home

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis activist is asking the community to join him in helping a senior citizen whose home is falling apart.

74-year-old Feridean Jones suffers from narcolepsy and her job selling beauty products did not afford her luxuries like a home warranty.

Joel Carter is the founder of Black Men in the Mirror Foundation which asks men to look in the mirror and give to society. Carter learned about Jones' problem.

"The porch is about to fall down. She's got a hole in the side of her house (and) anything can fly in," stated Carter.

He explained why he could not resist helping Jones.

"I guess when it rains, it probably rains in her house," Carter said.

Jones confirmed she has paid contractors to fix her home for years, but they never have finished the work.

"It just dropped my heart...seeing the light coming through the ceiling and just knowing she's a senior citizen and she needs help," stated Carter.

Carter showed how significant the damage really is.

"The problems go well beyond internal structural damage and a dilapidated roof. She also has gaping holes in various areas outside her home," added Carter.

Jones' sentiments to Carter are clear.

"I just appreciate him," declared Jones.

Carter is also struggling financially, but he plans to do everything he can to help her.

For more information on how to help Jones, the Black Men in the Mirror Foundation can be reached at 901-690-3458.
