One family remembers a mother and daughter Sunday

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Monday marks one year since a 13-year-old and her mother were killed after a car crash with a Memphis police officer. Sunday, a memorial was held on the site of the deadly accident.

To family members, the pain is still fresh as they count on each other for support.

"I know I had my family with me and I woke up in the hospital," stated Michael Ross.

For months, Ross was hospitalized after a wreck that killed his 13-year-old daughter McKayla and his fiancée Gene Epps.

Officer Alex Beard was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of aggravated assault. Beard was fired from the force 6 months later. The criminal case against him is still pending.

Family members recall the day of accident as if it was yesterday.

"It's hard for us each and every day. One year later, we're still trying to learn to cope and get through the day without them," stated relative Shaquitta Epps.

So, they wait and remember the lives lost.

"If they give him the maximum sentence on the charges...I'll feel a little (bit better), but that won't do nothing. That won't bring my family back," continued Ross.

Ross plans to not let the public forget his daughter and fiancée.

"I want to keep it in the public eye to let them know they didn't run over a dog or a cat. They killed my family. I'm going to fight until the end to make sure I get some justice," declared Ross.

Former officer Alex Beard is accused of turning off his lights and siren before speeding through the intersection that day.

Family members confirmed Beard has another hearing scheduled this Tuesday. They plan to be there.
