School board tackles big issues at next meeting

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The start of the school year has been hectic for Shelby County Schools and several incidents on school campuses have district leaders on the defense.

All of those issues will be laid out on the table during Tuesday's school board meeting.

Concerns about school safety could be the biggest issue yet.

From a shooting following a football game at Whitehaven High School, to a gun going off inside a 5-year-old's backpack at Westside Elementary.

Westside is also where another 5-year-old student says a woman lured her out of the building and stuck her with a needle.

School leaders have put extra security measures in place; equipping every school with metal detecting wands. Both the sheriff's office and school district say they are constantly looking for ways to improve school security.

There has also been lots of backlash over teachers not being paid on time.

Our cameras will be inside the board meeting and will bring you the latest on Action News 5.
