MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The final meeting of the 23-member Shelby County School Board will be held Tuesday. The board shrinks to seven members in September.

A reception at the Shelby County Schools central office bid 16 of 23 board members goodbye.

The super-sized board was formed under terms of a court settlement. It included members of the former Memphis City Schools board and county board in addition to others first appointed by the county commission then elected in 2012.

Despite its often unwieldy size, outgoing members feel the 23 member board succeeded in its mission of making the merger happen.

"I still say the real work was done was by the people who show up here every day and in the schools. They're the ones who really deserve the credit for things getting done," said Martavius Jones who is a outgoing board member.

Four other members will be added next year resulting in an eventful 13 member school board.
