MY TURN: Remember the 'Dream'

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Perhaps the timing was just a coincidence. President Barack Obama's meeting with urban mayors to discuss youth violence was scheduled on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

Memphis Mayor AC Wharton was one of the mayors who attended. Wharton spoke candidly with Action News 5 after the meeting, quoting the President about the tragedy of so many young black men being killed in many instances by other young black men. The Mayor then went to speak to speak about the number of young people in our community and others whose futures are being destroyed before they have a chance to realize the American dream the Dr. King spoke about so eloquently.

Dr. King through his words, his voice and his actions inspired our country to do many great things. He can still be our inspiration, but the hard work of fixing this problem has to start with our families, our neighbors, and our churches. Government, even the President, can only do so much.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
