MHP targets dangerous drivers

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - The Mississippi Highway Patrol is targeting those who drive dangerously around 18 wheelers.

The new program has a trooper sitting in the vehicle with the truck driver. If the trooper notices dangerous driving, then the tag number is reported.

"We usually have troopers scattered out in a nine mile radius. If you drive recklessly around the truck, pull in front of it without (giving) a turn signal, follow too closely, then the trooper in the truck is going to radio (in) your description tag number," said Captain Scoot Carnegie.

Troopers began using this technique in May and it has already resulted in 700 citations and 700 tickets in five Mississippi counties with the highest number of truck crashes.
