(WMC-TV) - Homicide investigators are trying to figure out who killed a special needs teacher found beaten and dead in her Evergreen-Vollintine area apartment.

Memphis police say a family member called them at 9:44 a.m. asking for a welfare check at 961 Oakmont Place in The University Cabana Apartment Complex. Inside the apartment, police say officers found a woman who appeared to have been beaten. She was pronounced dead on scene.

On scene, tearful family members identified the victim as Bronsha Lewis. They say she is a special needs teacher at Idlewild and Brewster Elementary.

"A beautiful person. One of the best people you ever wanted to meet," said Lewis' aunt, Rosie Banks. "She had a beautiful spirit. She would help anybody do anything for anybody. He didn't have to do her like that, leave her in there like that."

Family members says Lewis had been assaulted previously by her boyfriend, for which he just got out of jail.
