(WMC-TV) - Memphis police charged a 14-year-old suspect with aggravated assault and possession of a deadly weapon after a teenager was shot on a playground near Evans Elementary School.

According to neighbors, the 14-year-old shooting victim was playing with two others when the gun accidentally went off Sunday. Some in the neighborhood say the gunshot came during a game of Russian Roulette, but police cannot confirm this.

The victim is still in critical condition.

"I know [the kids] really don't respect firearms and the consequences firearms can bring," said neighbor D'Von Nathaniel.

Nathaniel went to Evans Elementary and is currently a sophomore at Memphis College of Art.

He wishes more young people would focus on their futures.

"Try to take AP classes, stay after for tutoring, join some recreational sports or something. Just keep doing things that will keep them away from the streets," he said.
