MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) –  An ornament on the rear-view mirror was the only rim left on Johnny Johnson's car after all four actual rims were stolen over the weekend, along with the tires.

"Came out Sunday morning to get ready to go to church, and no tires," said Johnson.

Her car was parked outside her apartment tower on Adams.

"I was like not me, anybody else but me, why me?" said Johnson.

Turns out, she wasn't alone.  Bardog Tavern's delivery truck was also hit while parked inside this garage at Front and Monroe.  At least five were targeted overnight Sunday in the downtown area.

"It's baffling to me that people go out of their way to do something this ridiculous, just for some tires," said delivery driver Rory Laster.

Action News 5 learned such thefts are on the rise across the county thanks, in part, to anonymous on-line marketplaces and advances in tire removal equipment.

According to one tire expert, it only takes about 30 seconds to remove a tire with the proper equipment.

"Obviously, somebody's just been going around and taking all the tires," said Zack Rutland.

Rutland's roommate was among the victims this weekend.  His Chevy Tahoe was left on blocks along South Front Street.

"And, you know, stuff like this doesn't happen very often -- so it's a little frustrating," said Rutland.

Johnny Johnson had an idea for when the crooks are caught.

"They need to let me run over them with them tires," said Johnson.  "The very ones that they took," she added.

Call Crime-Stoppers at 901-528-CASH with any information on the tire thefts.
