(WMC-TV) - The Angel Tree phone bank does not start until Wednesday, but families made sure Tuesday they had their children on the list for Christmas. Soon enough, volunteers will be manning the phones and taking names that could go on all the Salvation Army angels.

"People who want to give and donate [starting early] gives plenty of time so they can meet us in the mall and get the bags and the shopping lists," said Salvation Army Captain Jonathan Rich.

Although it is only September, it turns out the program is a detailed process and the phone bank is the beginning. You have to call 901-575-3510 to qualify. Children should be 12-years-old or younger, must have a social security number, and receive reduced or free lunches.

"[The phone bank] going to be crazy ... All the phones, every one of them will be ringing non-stop. All the volunteers will be at these tables taking names and numbers," said Rich. "We will serve the same family only every other year. So the same families can't get toys every year, but if they didn't get them last year they are eligible this year."

Five thousand children and senior citizens will receive gifts this year.

Once the children are selected and the families have been selected the next step is up to you. Contributors can get a plastic bag by picking an angel and filling it up full of toys and gifts with all the things on the kid's list.

The phone bank opens Wednesday and runs on weekdays through September 10 or until they have 5,000 names. The hours are 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
