MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Shelby County Commissioner was disciplined by his own party after Democrats claim he acts more like a Republican. Democrats say Shelby County Commissioner James Harvey was repeatedly warned, and now some in the party seek to sever ties with him.

"I sit here, and I watch us. And we act like a bunch of idiots," said Harvey in a previous interview. "I'm one of those guys who don't fit the traditional mold."

Harvey has been brutally honest with his colleagues on the Shelby County Commission. But Harvey's habit of making decisions across party lines may have caught up with him.

Shelby County Democratic Party chairman Bryan Carson says the local executive committee voted unanimously Thursday to discipline Harvey. Based, in part, on Harvey's opposition to a recent tax rate increase for schools and a decision as the new chairman to appoint conservative Heidi Shafer to head the budget committee.

"He overlooked six Democrats who were competent to hold that position, and we don't agree with that," said Carson.

A resolution to formally censure Harvey will be presented Saturday during a state-level Democratic Party meeting in Nashville.

"And shall they adopt it. James Harvey will be censured," said Harvey.

Carson says that could affect Harvey's ability to run as a Democrat in future elections.

Action News 5 reached out to Harvey, but he did not return our calls.
