(WMC -TV) - A vicious dog pack prowling Midtown Memphis neighborhoods has been found Friday. Some of the dogs are in custody and two got away.

Jessica Haverkamp says she has seen many strays in Midtown and the Evergreen Historic District through the years.

"I know stories, often friends who live in Midtown getting cornered in alleys by six or seven dogs at night and their dogs being threatened in the process," she said.

Haverkamp says it is frightening to her as a resident who has lived in the area for three years to know there is a new pack.

"That's not a situation you want to be in because, you can't really protect yourself when there's that many," she said.

The pack has about eight dogs. Havercamp and other residents say the dogs have killed cats in the neighborhood.

The same complaint was made by residents in Cooper-Young this summer.

Memphis Animal Services capture two of the dogs, but a pit bull and a German Shepherd got away.

"I'd like to see someone be able to help them," said Midtown resident Kristyn Adair.

Adair tried to rescue a smaller dog.

"There are several, you can tell. They didn't have homes. It seemed like they go back and forth [at] the tracks," she said.

Adair is not happy about what happens to the animals after they are trapped. She does not believe they should be put to sleep.

"I wish there was another way. I wish there weren't so many strays, but the bottom line ... People need to spay and neuter their pet," she said.

Adair says she has tried to feed some of the dogs. Although they would not accept the food, she says they never acted aggressively toward her.
