MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Unanswered questions are looming over the Shelby County Commission, which had its most heated meeting on Monday. Commissioners threw out accusations of ethics violations, racism, and ties to the Ku Klux Klan.

The fireworks began when Commissioner Terry Roland accused Commissioner Sidney Chism of an ethics violation for his vote on Monday night's school board appointment. That is when Chism fired back, saying Roland has family ties to the KKK.

Monday's meeting turned explosive when Roland called out Chism for voting for his cousin for school board.

"You tell me you ain't got an agenda?" Roland said as he stood up and walked across the chambers to consult with the county attorney in the middle of the meeting.

Commission Chairman James Harvey called for the theatrics to stop.

"The commissioner, in my opinion, was excessive and considerably out of order," said Harvey.

Then, Chism went for the jugular, accusing Roland of having family ties to the Ku Klux Klan.

"His family sold paraphernalia for the Klan for years. He's basically just a person that's against black folks," said Chism, who then defended his vote. "What does my relationship with Rosalyn Nichols have to do with her qualifications?"

Next, Chism accused Roland of targeting blacks.

"He's gotten after every black person on this commission in some way or another," he accused.

Roland is currently suing Chism for past votes on Head Start funding. Roland says the funding benefited Chism's day care and that it is an ethics violation.

An ethics panel is reviewing the complaint.
