GERMANTOWN, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Germantown resident says a rat infestation in the city is getting out of hand. She says she is tired of sharing her morning coffee with unwanted guest.

"I'm scared of them," said Gail Tyler. "In the last few days I've seen three [rats]."

She says Tuesday morning several of them were hanging out in front of a trap.

"You're gonna have some, but we shouldn't be living with what we're living with now," she said.

Tyler says they like to hide out in the bushes and only come out when it is quiet.

"It can't be just one home, it's gotta be city wide," said Tyler,

Tyler says her neighbor caught nine rats, and as many as seven neighbors have complained about the rodents.

Lee Harber serves on the neighborhood board and says that just Wednesday morning someone came out to inspect.

"They just came in [Wednesday] and doing their thing whether it's good, bad or indifferent ... They have responded ... But it's too early to have any results from it," he said.

Tyler says she pays 75 cents a month for a mosquito and rodent control service through her MLGW bill.

"Doesn't sound like a lot ... Get in an airplane look at how many houses are paying 75 cents. And god knows how many have rats," she said.

A spokesperson for the county says that money is used for prevention of rats and mosquitos and assists property owners to maintain, but it does not necessarily pay for infestation.

Someone from Shelby County is planning to come out to Tyler's house on Friday, and a representative from the health department will be out Thursday.

They say if rats are invading a neighborhood it usually means they are finding a food source.
