Luxury condo plan has some Mt. Juliet neighbors upset

MT. JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

High-end condo developments are all the rage in downtown Nashville and other areas, but many residents in the suburbs are saying "not in my backyard."

Aaron Brown has lived on Saundersville Road in Mt. Juliet for 14 years.

"We just really enjoy the quietness and the hometown atmosphere out here," Brown said.

The serenity near Cedar Creek Marina may be in jeopardy, though, as a neighbor recently had an architect draw up plans to build a luxury condo with 30 units and a parking garage.

The city council has met twice with neighbors concerning the rezoning, and the most recent meeting Monday evening got a bit heated.

"We probably had in the neighborhood of 50, and as far as I could tell, there was three for the project, the architect, the owner and his wife. The rest was opposing this," Brown said.

Brown's son had planned on building a dream home on the lot next door and now worries he will be crowded by an eyesore full of vacation rentals.

"The treetops in here are probably in the neighborhood of 30 feet, and the building, parts of it, is going to be three times that," Brown said.

The project would also mean more traffic on a narrow dead-end road with lots of wildlife.

Plus, neighbors are concerned about preserving the history of the area. They say there used to be a doctor's office and may even be some old graves nearby.

But the architect says the land is not on the National Registry of Historic Places and if there are any graves, they are across the street.

Both sides are set to meet again Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Mt. Juliet City Hall.

Channel 4 News reached out to the architect and home owner involved with the rezoning plans, but neither one wanted to talk on camera, saying they would save their comments for the meeting.
