One dead after shooting in Kroger parking lot

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - One of two people shot in a Memphis Kroger parking lot is dead. The shooting happened outside the Kroger in the 1900 block of South Third. One of three suspects, later pulled over at South Parkway and Webb Street, was pronounced dead at The MED.

It started as a robbery in the parking lot Thursday. The second victim is still in critical condition at The MED. He fired back at the suspects, shooting one of them.

The final act of a robbery suspect played out along South Parkway Thursday evening in the shadow of Monumental Baptist Church where civil rights leader Billy Kyles has long preached nonviolence.

Police say the suspect died after he and two others were pulled over shortly after they robbed and shot someone in a Kroger parking lot.

Officers with the Multi-agency Gang Unit happened to be in the neighborhood and assisted in locating the suspects.

A man and a woman, believed to be the getaway driver, were placed into squad cars on the scene.

"I go to church and tell my parishioners, this is ridiculous ... It don't make sense," said neighbor and Rev. James Austin.

He lost both a grandson and nephew to gun violence.

"Folks don't realize when you hurt one, you hurt a whole family. You just don't hurt one, you hurt them all," he said. "And this needs to stop, and we as a people need to stop this"

It was soon business as usual at the Kroger store, except for a portion of the parking lot surrounded by all too familiar yellow tape.

Police have yet to identify the suspect who died or release the names of his alleged accomplices. There is no information on whether they may have known the robbery victims.
