(WMC-TV) - Fans of the Southern Heritage Classic are converging on Memphis for a weekend of fun and football. The action kicked off Friday morning when thousands turned out for a live broadcast of the Tom Joyner Morning show.

Hours before the sun came up, Southern Heritage Classic fans partied and danced in front of the Liberty Bowl. They showed up early to get a good seat for radio legend Tom Joyner's live annual broadcast from the Liberty Bowl and Tiger Lane.

More than eight million listeners around the country tuned in as thousand of fans turned Tiger Lane into a giant party, and Joyner was having as much fun as the fans.

"I'm always looking for a party. We party with a purpose, and I'm looking for a party all the time, and, this, the Southern Heritage Classic is one of the best parties ever," he said.

Tennessee State University's band got in on the fun, too. They sounded off first.

A short time later it was Jackson State University's turn to take center stage. Many of these fans camped out all night to get into this party.

"To see old friends from college, high school, elementary ... We just love the atmosphere. It's wonderful," said classic fan Jacqueline Miller.
