(WMC-TV) - Many Memphians are enjoying their weekend as the Southern Heritage Classic and the Cooper-Young Festival are underway.

Resident Carl Piggie is confident the classic is good for the Mid-South community.

"It's a great thing to go on here in orange mound," stated Piggie.

Old friends and college mates alike are reuniting to watch the big game between Jackson State University and Tennessee State University.

"(We) get to see the different bands, all kinds of organizations, (and) the mayors have been here. It is just been a great experience," continued Piggie.

Meanwhile, Mid-South residents also have the opportunity to participate in the Cooper-Young Festival. Some are even selling goods there.

"Everything's handmade right here in Memphis. (While I do use) some of the most exotic wood from around the world, (the) handmade duck calls and wine bottle stoppers are made here," stated Colt Turpen.

Almost anything one could want could be found at the festival.

Some parents are even getting their kids' faces painted.

"We went through and got the kids' faces painted. We just had a good time," declared mother Kerry Smith.

The Southern Heritage Classic is expected to kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday.
