Search for shooting suspect continues; victim in critical condition

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Police are searching for a shooting suspect that forced a nearby elementary school into lockdown Monday morning.

Memphis police responded to reports of gunfire on the 2500 block of Melissa Drive, which is near Range Line Road and Frayser Boulevard.

A woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The suspect reportedly ran into a wooded area between an apartment complex and Brookemeade Elementary School, sending the school into lockdown.

"I said, 'I better go back there and check on them, see if they were having us pick up the kids or whatever,'" said Jimmy Williams, who is a grandfather. "But they said everything was alright, class was still going on."

Four days ago, a shooting happened at the same apartment complex.

Investigators say an ex-boyfriend kicked in the door and started a fight with his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend. When she grabbed a gun and started shooting, police say the ex-boyfriend took off running. Even though he left behind a trail of blood, police were not able to locate him.

Police did not connect the two shootings, nor have they released the identity of Monday's shooting suspect, but they are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
