(WMC-TV) - New rules could soon be in effect in DeSoto County concerning open-carry laws. DeSoto county supervisors passed an ordinance restricting where people can take their guns.

This ordinance keeps people out of DeSoto County buildings if they do not have the right gun permit. The Board of Supervisors says it is just a way to protect citizens.

Tracey James has a regular permit to carry his guns but not an enhanced permit. It means under a new ordinance passed by the DeSoto County board of aldermen he cannot take his weapon into buildings owned or leased by the county.

"We felt for the security of our people in buildings, and for peace of mind, we felt it was better to do so," said Bill Russell, DeSoto County Board of Supervisors.

The Board determined that county buildings are sensitive areas where emotionally-charged issues are addressed like child custody battles, criminal prosecutions and property forfeitures. The ordinance also says a person's weapon must be concealed. An enhanced permit means the person has taken a four-hour course on how to use a gun.

"I would agree ... Because you need some type of training and knowledge about the weapon because if it goes off you are responsible for that person's life you could possibly take," said DeSoto County resident Thelma

Signs will go up on all county buildings in DeSoto County. They will say no one can come in the building with a deadly weapon unless he or she has the enhanced permit.

DeSoto County resident Terry Ashworth likes the idea that the ordinance does not prohibit people from carrying guns.

"It's quite possible somebody could really go nuts and somebody you would have protection," said Ashworth.
