FedEx Cares week has global impact

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - If you hear hammering or sawing around Memphis this week, it could mean that volunteers with the annual FedEx Cares week are working somewhere near you.

This week, FedEx Cares volunteers are helping charities and agencies across the Mid-South in a gesture of giving back to the communities in which they live.

"We have team members who have been doing this for 12 years, 10 years, seven years that have been a part of Habitat for Humanity," said Neil Gibson, Vice President of Corporate Communications at FedEx.

Two-hundred FedEx employees have been tasked with building four habitat houses by Friday, with the satisfaction of working alongside the future owners.

"It makes me feel so good. This is going to be my first house. I've been living in apartments, mobile homes but a house is different," said the grateful future home owner, Pedro Barajas.

"It's really something to say I helped build that and say I helped build that with volunteers like FedEx so it's pretty incredible," noted Jessica Hord, director of marketing at Memphis' Habitat for Humanity.

But it is not just Habitat for Humanity getting extra help during FedEx Cares week. They are helping out with other agencies such as Memphis Food Bank, MIFA, Youth Villages, and Shelby Farms.

FedEx is not just doing this in Memphis. It is a global effort in 40 U.S. cities and other communities across the globe from China to Australia.
