MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A county deputy assigned to the juvenile court division faces an aggravated assault/domestic violence charge.

Freddie Armstrong, 59, was arrested Monday morning after an argument with his wife.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Armstrong's wife told investigators he got angry when she changed the channel to watch the news. She said he choked her until the room went dark. Armstrong said he pushed her, and she fell down.

He then left the house.

Investigators say Armstrong's wife did not have any bruising on her neck, and there was no sign of a struggle in the bedroom.

She told investigators she did not need medical attention but would get checked out at the West Clinic, where she is a cancer patient.

Armstrong first started working for Shelby County in June 2000 as a counselor at the penal farm. He took a job as a detention officer at juvenile court in April 2011.

There are no disciplinary actions in his county personnel record. Armstrong works under Juvenile Court Clerk Joy Touliatos. She said she cannot comment on this case.

Armstrong is off the job with pay as police and the county investigate what happened. Armstrong has posted $5,000 bond.
