(WMC-TV) - The Shelby County School board approved superintendent Dorsey Hopson's contract without objection Tuesday night.

His base salary will be $269,000, which is about a thousand less than he was reportedly making as interim superintendent.

"I appreciate the board, I appreciate the confidence they've shown in me. Let's get to work," said Hopson.

The contract also includes a free automobile and 20 vacation days at the start of the year.

"We looked at what similar districts paid their superintendents; Charlotte, Mecklenburg [counties were] a good comparison. I think their [superintendents] gets $293,000 a year plus benefits, but we're in a different situation here ... A different economic climate," said Hopson.

Hopson's salary will be about $15,000 less than that of former Memphis City Schools superintendent Kriner Cash. Sources say Hopson's lack of experience as an educator was part of the reason for a discount.

Kevin Woods was elected chairman of the new seven-member board; Chris Caldwell is vice chair.
