Millington police officer accused of domestic assault, bodily harm

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A Millington police officer is facing charges of domestic assault and bodily harm.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Jeff Hepler, 41, is accused of bruising and forcibly holding down his wife after an argument at their apartment.

When officers were called to the apartment on Big Creek View Circle, they say they found Hepler's wife on the bedroom floor. She was unresponsive and having seizures, but still breathing. She had bruises on her neck, upper chest, and legs.

In the affidavit, it says that when asked about the bruises, Hepler's wife said that he had "grabbed" her throat but did not "choke" her. The same affidavit says Hepler told police his wife made threats to "get his job" and "put a bullet in his head."

Millington Police Chief Rita Stanback says Hepler has been with the department since January 2013. He has not faced any disciplinary action since joining the force, but deputies say they answered three domestic violence calls at his apartment within the last year. Hepler is currently off the job, but still being paid.

"I think that's wrong, too," said Peggy McPherson, who lives nearby. "If you're gonna take the job away from someone for beating his wife, then don't pay him either. What kind of punishment is that if you get paid for beating your wife?"

Hepler is scheduled to appear in court September 19.
