MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - An investigation is underway after a homeless man was found dead near a North Memphis shopping center.

The man, who went by the name "Cardboard", was found dead where he slept behind Northgate Shopping Center on Highway 51.

The scene under an overhang where the man made his bed was so gruesome that we will not be showing video or photos from the scene.

Several people who knew "Cardboard" stopped by the scene Thursday afternoon to pay their respects to the man who earned his name because of the sign he toted around.

"Yeah, he was nice," said Jamar Miller, who works nearby. "Lotta [sic], lotta spunk."

The man moved to Frayser after years working the corner at Airways Boulevard and Lamar Avenue.

"He just stood there with that sign and that's all he did," said Mike Miller, who says he remembers "Cardboard" well.

Miller considers him an old friend, through hard times.

"He didn't harm nobody," said Miller. "He didn't talk to nobody, be mean to nobody, you know. He was real nice to everybody. He was a good guy, he really was."

As police search for his killer, people in the area say they were told "Cardboard" was killed in an argument over a woman.

A hard luck life on the streets -- that met a gruesome end.

"Yeah, it's sad...it's sad. He ain't had to do him like that," added Miller.

If you saw or know anything about the homicide, contact Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH. Crimestoppers number is 528-CASH.
