MY TURN: Supporting Alissa Warren

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - I want to take this opportunity to praise the Madison County Tennessee Sheriff's Department for their kind gesture in support of Alissa Warren.

Alissa is the 8-year old girl who was turned away from the carnival rides at the Dyer County Fair because of a physical disability. Madison County Sheriff's deputies made it possible for Alissa to attend the West Tennessee State Fair instead. They helped her get free passes, some spending money and she was able to ride the rides. As we got to know Alissa in covering this story, it became very obvious that she's all about her abilities, not her disability.

That's a great take away for all of us. Another teaching moment here is the power of saying yes. I'm sure the people who turned Alissa away from the Dyer County Fair were following a rule that somebody thought was important, but with just a little more caring and concern, they might have found away to do the right thing without breaking the rules. Being too quick to say no is its own form of disability.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
