MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A prayer vigil in honor of a Memphis high school athlete is marred by gunfire.

Dozens of witnesses confirmed a 24-year-old woman pulled up toward the end of the vigil for 16-year-old Ridgeway High School football player Dennis Price, Junior. After she parked, a man pulled in behind her, got out, and started shooting into the passenger side of the car.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Vernon Walton, 29, is accused of shooting her in a domestic violence situation which played out yards away from a police station.

The woman was hit with at least six bullets.

A father, who was is in the middle of all the chaos, said he is afraid for his children's safety.

"To come here and for somebody to start shooting. What reason is there to start shooting? There's no reason to start shooting anybody just because. It's just horrible. I'm scared for my kids everytime I let her go somewhere," declared Torrence Jackson.

A second person was hurt in the incident. During the chaos, someone who ran across the street to escape the gunfire got hit by a car.

Police have confirmed that person is in non-critical condition.

One of the witnesses stated she got a very close look at the shooter.

"I was trying to get out of the parking lot and the man that started shooting...he parked right in front of me, got out, and started shooting," stated Ashley Jackson.

Deputies have confirmed the woman, who was shot, may have known she was in danger. She filed a restraining order against Walton a week ago.

Walton is in custody and has been booked into the Shelby County Jail.
