Appeal filed against decision to allow demolition of Nineteenth Century Club

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - An appeal was filed in Chancery Court Friday regarding the legality of the sale of Nineteenth Century Club, a historic mansion on Union Avenue.

A lawsuit was originally filed after the mansion was sold at auction. It alleges that the club did not follow Tennessee law for non-profits when they sold the property in January 2013.

Earlier in September, a judge upheld the sale and said demolition could begin on the building 14 days later.

The appeal filed Friday, September 20 is in response to that decision.

"I'm an optimist and I always will be," said June West, who wants to see the mansion stay. "And I really, truly believe it will be saved. With my heart and soul I believe this building will be standing for future generations."

Preservationists hope the new owners, who operate several restaurants in town, will entertain an offer from a Nashville businessman to open a restaurant and event space in the mansion.

The demolition of Nineteenth Century Club would make room for a new restaurant and strip mall.
