MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Officers in Memphis are practicing a mock drill less than 24 hours after the mall attack in Kenya.

Frantic police activity outside Memphis' Oak Court Mall is the first clue its not business as usual.

According to the Memphis Police Director, Sunday's practice was an accurate portrayal of what may happen if the mall is attacked.

"We actually have an armed person...that's actually using that firearm inside of that place," stated Toney Armstrong.

One participant thought the practice drill was horrifying.

"It was really scary. It was a feeling like never before. Just being in a predicament like that was horrifying," said Roxie Nunally.

While it was terrifying, organizers are emphasizing it was only a practice drill. Yet, even during practice, busloads of victims were rushed to the hospital while swat teams eliminated the gunman.

"We feel like it's necessary training. If you look at what just happened overseas last night and continued to happen this morning, we would like to think we would be ready to handle it," explained Armstrong.

In the exercise, 17 people were killed and 72 people were injured.

Mall managers agree the practice is necessary.

"I think the important piece of that information is this can happen anywhere whether it's a school, a shopping center, or a place of business," asserted Justin Otto.
