Your opinion sought on possibility of four-lane road through Shelby Farms

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - It has been a controversy for years, but now, it is getting another round of public opinion. Should Farm Road, which cuts through Shelby Farms, be replaced with a four-lane parkway?

The proposal for this road is now new, in fact, it was designed eight years ago. The committee looked at environmental impact, surrounding neighborhoods, parks, and wildlife while putting together the proposal.

The project would essentially replace Farm Road as the main north-south route along the 4,500-acre park, with a divided four-lane parkway that would connect to Walnut Grove.

The project is estimated to cost $20 million to $25 million, but the federal government is expected to pay for 80 percent of it. The funding is already secure, however, a lot of controversy surrounding the plan remains.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation wants to hear what the public has to say about the proposal. A public hearing will be held Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Agricenter International.

Action News 5's Lauren Squires is talking with people who are against the proposal, as well as county leaders who like the idea. Hear from both sides -- and find out why you should consider attending the public hearing on Tuesday, on Action News 5 at 6 p.m.
