(WMC-TV) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation awarded its most expensive contract ever Friday. It will finally finish one of Memphis' busiest interstate interchanges.

The I-40 - 240 interchange was originally designed back in 1964, and a flyover was added about a decade ago. The new phase will complete the job.

Part of the project will make the junction at I-240 and Sam Cooper West Tennessee's first four-level interchange. It's an area that's created headaches for drivers for decades.

TDOT awarded a contract to Dement Construction of Jackson, Tennessee, which will begin work later this fall.

"[It's] the largest contract that TDOT will have ever signed ... A little over $109 million dollars," said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer.

The project would reduce congestion. Schroer said the newly approved work is long overdue.

"The I-40 corridor is one of the four largest commercial traveled roads in the nation. So there's a lot of need in that interchange," said Schroer.

Officials say the daily traffic count will increase exponentially in the coming years.

"We're at 180, 200 now, and we're projected to be well into the [300,000 a day] in 15 or 20 years," said TDOT Spokesperson Nichole Lawrence.

Drivers will deal with delays and other disruptions until the work is completed by the summer of 2017.
